Expertise

Umberto Cattaneo is a Public Finance Economist in the Universal Social Protection Department of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva. He currently leads the ILO’s efforts on financing social protection to ensure universal and adequate coverage. Umberto supports ILO constituents globally, regionally, and nationally in expanding fiscal space for social protection. His work includes, the development and application of tools to carry fiscal space for social protection analysis at the country-level, periodic contributions to the G20 Employment and Sustainable Finance Working Groups and the promotion of national-level partnerships with the IMF.

Before joining the ILO, Umberto worked at the World Bank in the Office of the Chief Economist for Africa. He has studied in several universities, including the School of Oriental and African Studies, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and Université Libre de Bruxelles. Umberto holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Genoa in Italy.
