Expertise

Claire Harasty has over 25 years of experience in economic and social policy analysis and advice and in interacting, influencing, and collaborating with governments and social partners. She joined the ILO in 1998 after teaching international economics at the University of Strasbourg. She has been Senior Advisor to the Assistant Director General (Governance, Rights and Dialogue) since January 2023 after having been Senior Advisor to the Deputy Director General for Policy for 4 years, coordinating the ILO's engagement in the G20, G7 and BRICS and the cooperation with the World Bank and the IMF on economic and social issues. She was Senior Employment and Development Policy Specialist in the Employment Policy Department from 2010 to 2018. Between 2008 and 2010, Ms. Harasty took an unpaid leave to work at the World Bank Office in Mali as a poverty economist. Ms. Harasty has written numerous articles and reports on employment, focussing on the link with poverty reduction, on targeted policies for youth in developing countries and on older workers. She holds a PhD in Development Studies from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.
