Article presenting an ethnographic technique for the evaluation and measurement of income generating activities and domestic activities of rural women in Asian developing countries. Proposes definitions of ' manpower activities' and labour force participation. Examines the findings of surveys that have used the time-allocation (time budget) research method of data collecting and were carried out in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal and the Philippines.
