Fabiola Mieres

Fabiola Mieres joined the ‘Effective Labour Market Institutions Team’ at the ILO Research Department in 2023. Her two main areas of current research include: i) The design and consequences of transnational temporary labour migration schemes for labour protection of migrant workers, and ii) conceptual and practical analysis of enforcement and compliance approaches with labour protection. Previously, she worked in the Labour Migration Branch conducting research on temporary labour migration and providing technical assistance to constituents on labour migration governance, and the socio-economic integration of migrants and refugees with a particular focus on Latin America and the Caribbean.

Fabiola is an interdisciplinary professional combining academic, policy and private sector experience. She held research positions at the University of Durham in the UK, the ILR at Cornell University, and the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO) and Di Tella University in Argentina. She was a Global Project Coordinator at the Global Union Federation Building and Woodworkers’ International and an economist in Ernst & Young in the Buenos Aires office. Fabiola holds a PhD in Politics/International Political Economy, an MA in IPE from the University of Manchester, a Master’s Degree in International Relations from Di Tella University, and a BA in Economics from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She was a recipient of the FCDO Chevening Scholarship among other grants, and has published on labour migration, recruitment, and worker-driven social responsibility initiatives to address forced labour in global supply chains. She has vast fieldwork experience in various countries, including the United States, Mexico, Malaysia and Qatar, and while specialising in agriculture, has also studied electronics, forestry and construction. Fabiola is also interested in knowledge generation through mixed methods to expand conceptions of evidence-based policy making.
