As the automotive industry shifts towards connected, autonomous, shared and electric (CASE) technologies and decarbonization, Japanese automotive parts SMEs face growing pressure to adapt. Drawing on enterprise surveys, worker perspectives and stakeholder interviews, this report examines how SMEs are responding to technological and market changes, the challenges they face in skills development and workforce transition, and the support needed to ensure that no enterprise or worker is left behind. It offers evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, employers and workers’ organizations to advance a just, inclusive and sustainable transition in one of Japan’s most important industries.
