Technology and skill transfer in auto component firms of the national capital region

Indian Journal of Labour Economics, Vol.47, pp.1067-1082
2004

Abstract

This paper makes an attempt to look at the inter-firm technology transfer of products, processes and practices in the auto component sector in the national capital region. The paper gives a detailing of different kinds of transfers across the size of the firm and shows how most of the transfers are in large firms and there are very few transfers to the small firms. An attempt is made then to look at whether the firms' productivity has improved or not due to such technology transfers and the results show that only product transfers heave a positive effect, though they are not significant. Process and practice transfers have negative impact implying that such transfers are actually not taking place in small firms. An earnings function was also fitted to see the impact of technology transfer on the wages of the workers, and here we found that both product and practice transfers had a positive impact, though statistically insignificant and process transfer had a negative impact.
