Abstract
Article reviewing background to, and results of obligatory ballots (voting) on compulsory trade union membership (Closed Shop) in New Zealand - examines the development of labour legislation on compulsory unionism since 1894, focussing particularly on the 1976 Industrial Relations Amendment Act, examines 1977 ballot results by occupation, industry, size of union, woman worker membership, and method of balloting, and gives voting behaviour implications from trade union, employer and government viewpoints.
