Article on the impact of economic recession on employment and labour market trends in rural areas of North Eastern Brazil, 1981- 1983 - discusses regional development, 1950-1980, regional disparity, increase in cyclical unemployment, decline of nonfarm employment, absorption of labour surplus by the informal sector, etc.; finds that economic growth has only limited effect on chronic underemployment and unemployment.
