Abstract
Article using examples in East Africa and Southern Africa to illustrate the importance of vocational training in the formal educational system and non-formal training for basic needs self reliance objectives in rural areas - discusses types of training needs, the value of craft training centres, the role of youth training-cum-production programmes in community development, youth economic groups, etc., and comments on the role of ILO skill development for self-reliance project.
