Abstract

racial discrimination labour market segmentation wage differential economic model sex discrimination sexual division of labour equal employment opportunity Brazil South Africa United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland USA
Reviews some major theoretical approaches to the treatment of racial discrimination in the labour market and examines some empirical studies. Suggests that while some existing theoretical work permits a variety of forms of socio-economic interaction and intergenerational propagation mechanisms to be accounted for, greater effort should be put into empirical evaluation. Examines the policy implications.
