Demonstrates the need for social protection systems in countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), in particular for women working in the informal sector. Describes three formal protection schemes currently operating in the region: national provident fund, social insurance schemes and non-contributory schemes and provides case studies of formal and informal schemes in three countries.
