Abstract
Argues that there is a need for specific safeguards to ensure that participation is authentic in order for the procedural element of participatory governance to lead to genuinely equitable outcomes. Discusses whether socially sustainable development is a fundamental principle of contemporary international law. Considers the role of ILO and other intergovernmental organizations in fostering participatory structures.
