Abstract
Based on surveys of poor households in Thailand and Zambia carried out in 2000. Uses a sustainable livelihood approach to explore the livelihood problems experienced by these households during economic crisis and examines their survival strategies and coping mechanisms. Identifies types of capital available to them and investigates support available from inside and outside the community. Highlights the role of the informal sector employment and makes proposals for informal sector policies.
