Abstract
This note outlines three major priorities on sickness benefits: (i) importance of organizing and financing sickness benefits through social insurance, building from an international review of experiences; (ii) the importance and policy options for sickness benefits to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 crisis,(iii) extension of such benefits for workers in non-standards forms of employment, such as gig workers. Finally, it provides analysis and recommendations on the administrative and economic feasibility of extending sickness benefits to workers in non-standard forms of employment through social insurance.
