Comprises an overall study of the working conditions of bidi tobacco workers in India along with results of field studies in four States. Examines the characteristics of employment in the sector, highlighting the informal production relations and the exploitation of workers. Describes government welfare measures, considers the problems faced by the industry and explores prospects for employment diversification.
