Abstract
The road transport sector is strategically essential to social and economic development and ensures passenger and freight mobility across jurisdictions and countries. It makes an important contribution to economic growth and job creation. Road infrastructure investments and operations have strong impacts on other sectors of the economy. Yet, every year, some 1.3 million people are killed and up to 50 million people are injured on the world’s roads. Commercial vehicles are involved in approximately 10 to 22 per cent of all road crashes. Road traffic fatalities are the leading cause of death for young people aged 5 to 29 and road traffic injuries are the eighth leading cause of death globally. In addition to the human suffering they cause, road traffic deaths and injuries impose significant societal, economic and financial losses.
