Abstract

structural adjustment social protection employment employment policy trend industrial restructuring structural change employment creation occupational structure labour market segmentation labour force participation precarious employment unemployment income distribution poverty wage differential labour relations statistical table Brazil India
Explores how structural changes have affected the labour market, in particular, employment creation, labour market vulnerability and access to jobs. The labour situation in the two countries presents a number of similarities: protective labour legislation, state intervention schemes, segmented labour markets, and a large informal sector. Shows trends from 1972 to 1993.
