Abstract
This ILO brief highlights the critical role of the textiles and clothing industries in global economic and employment growth. These sectors provide jobs to over 90 million people, predominantly women, and are undergoing significant transformations driven by technological advancements, sustainability imperatives, and changing consumer preferences. The brief emphasizes the need for governments, employers, and workers to collaborate in addressing decent work deficits, such as poor working conditions, low wages, and gender inequalities. It also underscores the importance of promoting skills development, lifelong learning, and sustainable practices to navigate the sector's rapid changes and ensure a just transition for all workers. The ILO's initiatives, including the Better Work Programme and the adoption of international labour standards, are crucial in advancing decent work and social justice in the textiles and clothing sector.
